“But I don’t know enough yet.”
I heard this sentence so many times not only from other people but also from myself. Whether you’re switching to tech from another field, returning after a break, or just beginning your journey—there’s this dreadful idea that we need to “know everything” before we can start.
But here’s the truth I wish someone had told me earlier:
👉🏽 You don’t need to know everything.
👉🏽 You don’t even need to know most things.
👉🏽 You just need the willingness to learn.
The Myth of Being “Ready”
Let’s be honest, sometimes tech can feel like a giant mountain.
New tools, acronyms, frameworks, and people who’ve been in tech for years. It’s easy to feel like everyone else knows more than you and that you need to be an expert before even stepping foot into the room.
The good news is…nobody started knowing everything..in fact until now, nobody knows everything.
Even the most confident developers or tech leads once Googled “what is an API” or “how to use Github.” Everyone starts somewhere.
There’s no perfect level of readiness. If you wait until you feel 100% confident, you’ll be waiting forever.
Start Small, Start Scrappy, Start Anyway
Here’s what I always tell people now:
Pick one thing you’re curious about—and follow that thread and be obsessed with learning it.
That might mean:
- Taking a beginner course in HTML
- Joining a community for women in tech
- Setting up your first Notion page for tech notes
- Watching YouTube videos on how websites work
Whatever it is, make it doable and interesting. You don’t need to map out your entire career today. You just need to take the next kind step, even a baby step will do.
The key is to start.
You Belong Even While You’re Learning
This is the part I want to highlight the most:
You are not an imposter just because you’re learning.
Learning is what people in tech do every single day.
You’re allowed to ask questions. To copy-paste code to see what happens. To feel confused and keep going. That’s not a weakness—that’s how you grow. Don’t be afraid of errors, of failures, of mistakes, these are all part of learning.
Let Curiosity Lead You
Instead of pressure, what if you let curiosity lead your journey?
What if learning tech wasn’t a race, but a marathon?
What if you trusted that your unique idea has value—even as you learn the ropes?
You are allowed to learn at your own pace.
You are allowed to build before you feel ready.
You are allowed to take up space in tech.
In Case No One Told You Yet…
💛 You don’t need to know everything to begin.
💛 You are smart enough, right now.
💛 You belong here.
So go ahead. Try that course. Build that simple project. Raise your hand and ask questions. You’re doing better than you think.
